According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United will try to make three marquee signings in the upcoming summer transfer market. Erik ten Hag has done wonders at the club post his arrival. And, he is keen on adding more quality to his squad in order to take the next step.
United are currently 3rd in the Premier League with 49 points out of their 24 matches. They are on course to return to UEFA Champions League next season. The Manchester-based club have already won a trophy this season and are still in the race for three more.
Erik ten Hag’s arrival has changed a lot of things at the club. There is a belief that they can win against any opposition on any given day. The Dutch manager wants to push for more glory next season and as a result, wants to add more quality to his ranks.
Meanwhile, Manchester United had spent big ahead of the ongoing season. They signed Casemiro from Real Madrid for £70 million, and Antony and Lisandro Martinez from Ajax for £85 million and £56 million respectively. The summer arrivals have done wonders for the club. While Ten Hag wants to land three-star players in the summer, he has been made aware of the financial restrictions. The club are not in a situation to spend big amidst takeover talks and Financial Fair Play restrictions have also had an impact on their budget for next season.
Their wage bill has also hampered their spending ability. The Red Devils broke the Premier League record in the 2021/22 season with a staggering £384.2m wage bill. A lot of it was because of Cristiano Ronaldo’s £450,000-a-week deal.
Ten Hag has already introduced a new wage structure at Old Trafford after the exit of Ronaldo. But, they will still have a limited purse to push for players in the summer. The club have informed the manager that he will have to offload players to increase his spending limit. And, United are ready to let go of a few of their star players.
Their financial condition was quite evident in the January transfer window. Ten Hag’s men only signed players on loan. They brought in Jack Butland, Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer to fill up their requirements until the end of the season.
With United ready to let go of some of their highest earners, it will be interesting to see if they can manage to land their three big targets ahead of next summer.
