Newcastle United plot Marco Asensio swoop

Newcastle United will reportedly compete with Arsenal in the race to sign 27-year-old Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Marco Asensio is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies have joined Arsenal in the race to sign the 27-year-old Real Madrid attacker in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.

Marco Asensio was once among the brightest young prospects in his homeland when he arrived at Real Madrid. But a long-term injury in 2019 has ended up being the roadblock in his path to fulfilling his potential. And the Spaniard is now a backup option for Carlo Ancelotti, behind Rodrygo Goes and Federico Valverde.

The 27-year-old has still been a handy contributor to Real Madrid. And he has six goals and five assists in 31 appearances across all competitions thus far this season. But Asensio’s contract situation has left Real Madrid in a spot of bother. And Arsenal and Newcastle United hope to sign the player in a Bosman move this summer.

Arsenal bolstered the offensive unit by signing Leandro Trossard in the January transfer window. But Mikel Arteta does not have a viable backup to Bukayo Saka. In addition, Asensio’s versatility means he can be an alternative to Martin Odegaard for the no. 10 role. So it is hardly surprising that the Gunners recently stepped up their interest in the 27-year-old.

But Arsenal will face stiff competition from Newcastle United in the race to sign the Real Madrid star. Meanwhile, another report from Fichajes has claimed that Asensio is one of the three top targets for Newcastle United heading into the summer transfer window. The other two players on this list are Raphinha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The interest in the 27-year-old is hardly surprising, considering Miguel Almiron has struggled to hit top form since the World Cup break ended. And the Real Madrid attacker can potentially be an upgrade on the Paraguayan international.

Newcastle United will have a decent chance of signing the Spaniard if they finish in the top four. But Arsenal should ideally be in the pole position, especially if they win the Premier League title. But it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid can extend Asensio’s stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.
