According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Josko Gvardiol is a top summer target for Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions are ready to cough up €100 million to secure the Croat’s services. The RB Leipzig defender is also a target for Premier League heavyweights like Chelsea.
Josko Gvardiol has gone from strength to strength since joining RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb. The 21-year-old has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga in the last two years. His stature has also risen considerably on the international stage after a productive campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Croatian international has turned out 74 times thus far for RB Leipzig, chipping in with four goals and four assists. Gvardiol’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with several European bigwigs keen on signing him. And Real Madrid and Chelsea are two of his prospective suitors.
Real Madrid will be in a precarious situation over the future of Nacho in the coming weeks. Talks between the two parties over a new contract have not progressed well. And the veteran Spanish defender might leave Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer. So Los Blancos will have to invest in a replacement.
Meanwhile, with David Alaba on the wrong side of 30, investing in a young centre-back will be the way to go. Josko Gvardiol has thus emerged as a viable target for Real Madrid. Like Los Blancos, Chelsea will be eager to sign a centre-back in the summer. That is because Kalidou Koulibaly has failed to make his mark since arriving from Napoli last year. And Gvardiol has emerged as a top target for the west London club. And Chelsea recently contacted RB Leipzig to hash out a deal.
It is unclear if Chelsea will shell out €100 million or more to beat Real Madrid to Gvardiol’s signature. But with the RB Leipzig defender keen on joining Los Blancos, Chelsea will have an uphill task pursuing him.
