Newcastle United join Manchester City in Antonee Robinson pursuit

Newcastle United join the race for 25-year-old full-back Antonee Robinson amidst interest from Manchester City.

According to a report by Football Insider, Newcastle United have joined the race to sign 25-year-old Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson. Eddie Howe wants to add an attack-minded full-back to his squad ahead of next season and has identified Robinson as a key transfer target.

The Magpies boss will look to further strengthen his squad in the summer. Howe has a huge project in his hand as Newcastle look to push for Premier League glory in the coming years. They have the financial backing to sign players and he believes that adding Robinson will take them a step closer.

Antonee Robinson joined Fulham back in the summer of 2020 from Wigan Athletic. His contract at the London-based club ends in the summer of 2024. There haven’t been talks of a renewal yet and a departure in the summer looks likely at this point in time.

The USA international has featured in 91 matches for Fulham and has been involved in 7 goals. In the ongoing season, he has featured in 22 matches. The 25-year-old has played in every league game part from the one in which he was suspended.

Meanwhile, Robinson was a key part of the USA World Cup squad that reached the knockout stage in Qatar a few months back. He played every minute of their campaign and was impressive on the global stage. The Fulham left-back’s performances of late have attracted a lot of attention and big clubs across Europe have their eyes set on him.

Newcastle United have been interested in the Fulham defender for a while now. Eddie Howe wants to add a young pacey full-back to his ranks. While Dan Burn has done a great job at left-back for the Magpies, he doesn’t offer much in attack. As a result, Newcastle’s interest in Robinson makes perfect sense.

The Magpies are currently fourth in the Premier League. They are on course to secure Champions League football for next season. If they do manage to book a spot in Europe’s marquee event, convincing Robinson won’t be that big a deal.

However, the interest from Manchester City will make life difficult for them. Pep Guardiola’s fallout with Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo saw him leave on loan to Bayern Munich. While he might return to City in the summer, he is likely to be sold. As a result, they will push for a full-back and Robinson is an important target for them.

It is going to be an interesting transfer tussle between the Premier League teams. However, they will also face competition from the Italian clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan. The two Italian giants have been keen on signing the player of late.
