Liverpool, Newcastle United make approach for Jonathan Tah

Liverpool and Newcastle United are looking to sign the Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah at the end of the season.

According to a report from 90min, Liverpool will face competition from Newcastle United for Jonathan Tag. The two Premier League clubs have already submitted an enquiry for the 27-year-old German international defender.

Liverpool need a defensive overhaul in the summer, especially with players like Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Nathaniel Phillips linked with moves away. While Matip and Gomez are no longer the players they used to be, Phillips needs to move on in search of regular playing time.

Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk are the only reliable defenders at the club right now. So Liverpool will need to bring in more than one defender in the summer. The Reds have thus shown interest in several centre-backs, including Jarrad Branthwaite.

Jonathan Tah has been a key player for Bayern Leverkusen for a number of years and could be an important signing for Liverpool. The German international has the technical attributes to play for a top club like Liverpool. And he has the physicality to thrive in English football as well.

Meanwhile Newcastle United have seen the benefits of signing a top-class defender. And the arrival of Sven Botman has transformed them at the back. Eddie Howe will look to sign a quality partner for the Dutch defender now.

The Magpies could be playing in the UEFA Champions League next season, and they will have to face world-class attackers on a weekly basis. Newcastle United need to improve their defensive options at the end of the season. And the 27-year-old would be a superb acquisition. Newcastle United have also shown interest in several centre-backs, including Piero Hincapie.

Jonathan Tah has already proven himself in the Bundesliga over the years. And the opportunity to play in the Premier League could be an exciting option for him. The defender is entering his peak years and could make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

Liverpool and Newcastle will be hoping to challenge for major trophies in the coming season, and they need to improve their squad in order for that to happen. Tah could be a transformative signing for both sides and they have the financial resources to make the move happen as well.
