Real Madrid front-runners to sign Josko Gvardiol

Real Madrid have reportedly been linked with a move for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Josko Gvardiol has chosen Real Madrid as his next destination. But the Spanish giants will face competition from clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United for the 21-year-old defender.

Gvardiol is one of the most talented young defenders in world football right now and he was exceptional for his country in the recently concluded World Cup. The 21-year-old played a key role in Croatia’s run to the semi-finals of the tournament. And it is no surprise that he is being linked with top clubs from around the globe.

Real Madrid need to add more quality and depth to their back four. And Gvardiol would be a sensational long-term acquisition for them. It remains to be seen whether they can fend off the competition from the Premier League clubs.

The player is reportedly valued at €100 million. And Real Madrid will have to break the bank to secure his signature. Clubs like Liverpool could use a quality defender as well. Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have been quite underwhelming this season and Jurgen Klopp should look to bring in a more reliable defender.

However, it would be quite surprising if Liverpool decided to spend €100 million on a defender when the other areas of their squad are in need of reinforcing as well. Meanwhile, Manchester United could lose Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in the summer, and Erik ten Hag will need to bring in replacements.

The Red Devils already have Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as their starting defenders, and they might not prefer to spend €100 million on another centre-back. It remains to be seen how the situation develops.

The report adds that the presence of Luka Modric at Real Madrid could give the Spanish club an edge in the transfer race. The 21-year-old defender could be keen on a reunion with his compatriot at Santiago Bernabeu next season.

Furthermore, Real Madrid are undoubtedly the biggest club in the world and the opportunity to play for them is likely to be an attractive proposition for any player.
