Galatasaray are reportedly in negotiations with Liverpool for 25-year-old defender Nat Phillips.
According to The Athletic, Turkish giants Galatasaray are interested in securing the services of Liverpool star Nat Phillips.
The centre-back is the club’s fifth choice in the position this season and is struggling for regular minutes. Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are all ahead of him in the pecking order.
With the January deadline fast approaching, Galatasaray are ready to make their move for the Bolton Baresi. Liverpool are not averse to selling him, and a deal could be struck for around £10 million.
The Reds are struggling to bring in midfielders, and a massive revamp is the need of the hour at Anfield. It makes sense for them to cash in on fringe players and top up the transfer kitty ahead of the summer transfer window.
Phillips is a confident player who, to his credit, is too good to be the fifth choice at Liverpool. A move to Turkey will hand him regular playtime and the chance to further his career at the top level. Okan Buruk’s side are currently top of the league. And bringing in Phillips will add more steel to their defence.
Galatasaray’s centre-back roster at this moment consists of Victor Nelsson, Abdulkerim Bardakci, Mathias Ross, Metehan Baltaci and Emin Bayram. Phillips is a more dynamic player than any of the players already at the Nef Stadyumu and is also an offensive threat from set-pieces.
Ironically, while selling Phillips makes financial sense for Liverpool, the 25-year-old has something Jurgen Klopp’s side is sorely lacking right now-passion. The centre-back has a cult following at Liverpool following his exploits in the 2020/21 season.
The Reds have looked quite vulnerable at the back and have failed to maintain defensive solidity. Virgil van Dijk is injured, while Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are struggling for form. There is little to be lost by having Phillips see out the season at the heart of the Liverpool defence. At the very least, the fans will see a player give it his all on the field.
