Newcastle United star Allan Saint-Maximin is not pleased with club’s pursuit of Everton ace Anthony Gordon.
According to 90min, Newcastle United attacker Allan Saint-Maximin is displeased with the Magpies’ pursuit of Everton star Anthony Gordon.
The young Englishman enjoyed a solid 2021/22 season, where he helped the Toffees stave off relegation. His form has dropped off this season, and it shows with the Merseysiders sinking deeper into the relegation quagmire.
The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to St. James’ Park this month and is open to the idea of swapping blue for white and black. Eddie Howe’s side are an intriguing project right now and could provide Gordon with the guidance needed to take his game to the next level. The same can not be said of Goodison Park, a place that resembles a sinking ship at this time.
Newcastle have been following Gordon for a while now and have a good idea of what to expect from him. Chelsea were also keen on the 21-year-old last summer, but the Magpies now appear to be in the driving seat. Howe is also sold on getting the Englishman on board and could oversee the development of yet another talented individual.
One man who is not in favour of Gordon’s arrival at St. James’ Park is French attacker Allan Saint-Maximin. The 25-year-old has been Newcastle’s go-to man upfront in recent years but has seen injuries impact his playtime this season.
More so, despite returning from injury he is yet to start regularly under Howe. In fact, Saint-Maximin has not started a game since August and has fallen down the pecking order. Bringing in Gordon is likely to further impact his chances of playing, and has every reason to be miffed.
Saint-Maximin was keen to extend his contract at Newcastle, but there appears to be little movement in that direction. His current deal expires in 2026, and the Magpies could choose to offload him next summer.
Should Gordon arrive, Howe will have a young promising attacker who causes less drama off the field than Saint-Maximin. The Frenchman is a match-winner, but is too volatile at times and appears to have failed to adjust to the new normal at the club.
Should Newcastle sign Gordon this month, it more or less permanently relegates Saint-Maximin to the bench. However, all hope is not lost for the Frenchman as Chelsea are also set to make a renewed approach.
The Blues have been anything but frugal in the transfer market and are planning to offer the player back on loan to Everton in a bid to beat Newcastle to the punch. Such a deal is likely to suit Everton best given their need for attackers for the second half of the campaign. Much attention will be placed on the young Englishman from Newcastle in the coming days, and not all will want the same thing.
