Tottenham table bid to sign Pedro Porro

SSC Napoli vs US Lecce: Preview and Prediction as the Serie A leaders look to strengthen their hold on the summit.

Tottenham Hotspur are still hoping to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting CP before the January transfer window closes.

Tottenham Hotspur will hold a fresh round of talks with Sporting CP in a bid to convince them to sell Pedro Porro for a reasonable price this month, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Italian journalist further adds that Spurs are offering €37 million as a fixed fee for the player and are ready to include a player to sweeten the deal as well.

Pedro Porro has a release clause of €45 million in his current contract, and Sporting CP want Spurs to pay the amount in full. But it is clear that Tottenham do not want to do that. So the transfer will only go through if the two parties can come to a compromise.

The report offer of €37 million and a player in exchange for the Spaniard seems like a reasonable proposal. But it remains to be seen whether Sporting CP are prepared to consider the bid to sell him to Tottenham.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has been using Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal as his right-backs this season. But both players have been largely inconsistent. They are not reliable defensively either. The Italian manager has always benefited from having quality attacking full-backs (Marcos Alonso at Chelsea and Achraf Hakimi at Inter Milan for example). Porro could be a key player for Spurs in his system.

Conte’s setup will allow the Spanish defender to influence the game in the final third as well. Porro can play as a winger as well, and his versatility will be a major plus for the north London club if they can sign him.

The 23-year-old has contributed to 12 goals this season (two goals, 1ten assists), and he would be a distinct upgrade on Tottenham’s current full-back options. Furthermore, the move is likely to benefit the player as well.

He will only improve while playing against better teams. Conte is a world-class coach who could take Porro to a whole new level in the coming seasons. The defender is reportedly keen on the move. It will be interesting to see how the latest rounds of talks materialises now and whether the two parties manage to come to an agreement.
