PSG rival Bayern Munich for Kai Havertz

Graeme Souness heavily criticises Kai Havertz.

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly joined the transfer race for Chelsea attacker Kai Havertz, who is also a target for German giants Bayern Munich.

European powerhouses Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich could be set to battle it out in the bidding war to land versatile Chelsea and Germany attacker Kai Havertz. That’s according to French publication Media Foot, which says PSG are currently monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation at Stamford Bridge, but a move in the summer is deemed more realistic.

The Germany international is currently in his third season at Chelsea since making the blockbuster £72 million move from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 but hasn’t quite lived up to the billing. The only exception was his match-winning goal against Manchester City in the 2020-21 Champions League final, which helped the Blues win the prestigious trophy for just the second time in the club’s history.

However, he has failed to use that memorable moment as a springboard for further success and showcase his full potential in a Blue shirt. In total, he has contributed 29 goals and 15 assists from his 119 appearances across all competitions, with his inconsistency in the final third hurting Chelsea’s bid to become a Premier League title contender, or even a top-four favourite, these days.

Havertz has six goals in 27 games across all competitions this season, sharing the team’s top scorer status with Raheem Sterling. What’s even more concerning is that Chelsea have failed to find out his best position. The 23-year-old joined as an attacking midfielder who predominantly operated on the right flank; however, he has become more of an underperforming No. 9 at Stamford Bridge.

With Chelsea spending big money on signing the likes of Mykhaylo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke in the January transfer window, whereas Christopher Nkunku is also expected to arrive next summer, they will have to ship several of the surplus players out, or they might be taking into account a big sale in the near future to balance the books.

And there is a strong case to be made that the big-money sale will be of Havertz, with many of the fringe players carrying low stock. Contracted at Stamford Bridge until 2025, Havertz’s stock remains very relevant, with transfermarkt valuing him at a healthy €70 million.

Recent reports suggest that Bayern Munich are looking to bring him back to the Bundesliga in a late winter swoop. The 23-year-old was widely linked with a move to Allianz Arena when he was at Leverkusen, so it is not surprising that they are still interested in him.

It would also not be odd if Havertz will be open to returning to a league where he once flourished to rediscover his lost mojo. PSG have also joined the race for the versatile striker and could give Bayern a run for their money in the Havertz transfer war.

The PSG hierarchy views the German as a “very interesting” proposition and believes his “versatility, his speed, and technical qualities, as well as his potential” make him a great potential addition to Christophe Galtier’s squad in Paris, as per the above report. It’s going to be interesting to see where Havertz’s future lies in the near future.
