La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly mulling over bringing 36-year-old goalkeeper Keylor Navas back to the Santiago Bernabeu.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Keylor Navas is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions want to re-sign the 36-year-old from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain. The Merengues are scouring the market for a replacement for Andriy Lunin.
Keylor Navas has enjoyed a legendary professional career, both at the club level and on the international stage. The Costa Rican international rose to prominence during his three-year stint with Levante. His stock then skyrocketed after a scintillating 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign with his nation. That earned Navas a move to Real Madrid.
The 36-year-old spent half a decade with Real Madrid, winning multiple honours, including several UEFA Champions League titles. But his stint with Los Blancos ended in September 2019 after he fell behind Thibaut Courtois in the pecking order. Navas joined PSG from Real Madrid and has been decent for the most part.
But the veteran goalkeeper has again become a backup goalkeeper, with Gianluigi Donnarumma usurping him. As a result, the Costa Rican goalkeeper has turned out just once this season. Navas thus wants to leave the Ligue 1 champions for regular game time. And the situation has captured the attention of former club Real Madrid.
Real Madrid might have to delve into the market for a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. That is because Andriy Lunin is considering his future at the Bernabeu as he wants regular game time. And the Ukrainian international’s potential departure will force Real Madrid to sign a shot-stopper.
Several goalkeepers, including Fernando Pacheco, have thus emerged on Los Blancos’ radar. But Navas is arguably a more attractive target for Real Madrid, considering his history with the club. However, signing the 36-year-old from PSG will be complicated. The biggest reason for that is the potential negotiations with the Ligue 1 champions.
The relations between Real Madrid and PSG are strained. And Les Parisiens might be reluctant to sell the 36-year-old to the Merengues. In addition, Navas does not want to be a backup and might not be open to rejoining Real Madrid. So a summer move seems unlikely as things stand.
