West Ham United are ready to rekindle their interest in Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips
According to Football Insider, Premier League strugglers West Ham United are interested in securing the signature of Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips.
The English international came through the ranks at Leeds United, cementing himself as a reliable player for both club and country. This saw him earn a mammoth move to the defending Premier League champions last summer.
Phillips has made four appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side so far but is yet to play a full ninety minutes. He was also said to have returned overweight from the World Cup and is today far from a sure starter at The Etihad.
The midfielder’s extra kilos have not gone down well with Guardiola, who has publicly called out Phillips for his physical excess. This has alerted an old suitor of the 27-year-old, to rekindle their interest in his services.
West Ham were keen on Phillips before he moved to Man City. Now that his time at The Etihad looks choppy, David Moyes and co are seeking to swoop down and land their man. The Hammers have struggled badly this season and could do with some steel in the middle of the pitch to improve their fortunes.
Tomas Soucek is woefully off form, while Declan Rice’s time at the London Stadium appears to be nearing its end. The Hammers’ skipper is likely to leave the club next summer, and the London club must make quick plays to address that shortcoming.
Moyes believes Phillips can be the man to replace Rice. More so, there is also a belief that West Ham can land the player on the cheap. Whether Man City are ready to cut their losses or retain faith in the 27-year-old remains to be seen.
A physically strong player, Phillips is excellent with the ball at his feet and is a formidable player in midfield. He is not shy to make a tackle and shows excellent awareness to win back possession. He also has an eye for goal and is a deft hand at set pieces.
On paper, Phillips has all the skill sets that West Ham needs in the middle of the park. Whether it be January or next summer, it will be interesting to see if Man City will throw in the towel on Phillips and move him on.
