Tottenham Hotspur are looking to add more quality to their midfield, and they have offered €15 million to sign Franck Kessie from Barcelona.
Alfredo Martinez has told Onda Cero that Tottenham have offered €15 million to sign 26-year-old Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie when the transfer window reopens in January.
Kessie has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona over the last few months, and he needs to leave the Spanish club in order to play regular first-team football. Tottenham have been keeping tabs on the player for a while now.
Antonio Conte needs to add more depth to his midfield, and the 26-year-old could prove to be a quality acquisition. The physically-imposing midfielder has the attributes to succeed in the Premier League. And the Tottenham boss could help the Barcelona midfielder get his career back on track.
Tottenham have not been able to rotate their first-choice midfielders Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg because of the lack of depth. So signing Kessie will allow Conte to shuffle his pack and keep the players fresh during a busy second half of the season.
It will be interesting to see if Barcelona are willing to accept the €15 million offer from the Premier League club in the coming weeks. The Spanish giants signed the 26-year-old midfielder on a free transfer from AC Milan. But Kessie has failed to establish himself as a key player for them. It makes sense for them to cash in on him and the €15 million offer seems quite reasonable.
The Spanish club are going through financial difficulties, and the departure of Kessie would help them reduce the wage bill. Furthermore, they could also use the proceeds from the sale to improve their own squad in January.
The former AC Milan midfielder will add power, presence and defensive steel to the Tottenham midfield. If he manages to regain his form and confidence, he could prove to be a bargain for the London club in the long run. But Kessie is reportedly not interested in leaving Barcelona in January.
Nonetheless, the 26-year-old is in his peak years right now, and he has the ability to justify the reported €15 million outlay over the next few seasons. Meanwhile, summer signing Yves Bissouma has struggled since his arrival at Tottenham, and that has also forced the Londoners to consider other options in the transfer market.
