Liverpool are in advanced negotiations to sign Dutch attacker Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in January.
According to a report from The Athletic, Cody Gakpo is heading to Liverpool in a deal worth around £37 million. The report claims that the Reds have a good relationship with the 23-year-old Dutch international’s agency SEG and are close to reaching an agreement with the Dutch outfit.
Gakpo has been phenomenal for club and country this season and he could prove to be a quality acquisition for the Reds. The 23-year-old scored three goals in the World Cup and his performances helped the Netherlands reach the quarterfinals of the tournament. The versatile attacker has scored 13 goals and picked up 17 assists for PSV Eindhoven this season.
Liverpool are without Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota due to injuries and Jurgen Klopp needed to bring in a quality signing to reinforce his attacking unit. Gakpo’s signing could not have been better timed.
The Reds signed Diaz under similar circumstances from Porto and he proved to be an instant hit. It remains to be seen whether Gakpo can hit the ground running at Anfield now.
The player has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks. Manchester United were reportedly very keen on securing his services. But it seems that the Anfield giants are close to beating them to the 23-year-old’s signature.
Gakpo is yet to enter his peak years, and a manager like Klopp could take him to a whole new level. The German manager has worked wonders with talented young attackers since arriving at Anfield and there is no reason why he cannot turn Gakpo into a world-class player as well.
Liverpool will be hoping to secure Champions League qualification for the next season and they are currently out of the top four. They need to improve in order to get back into the top four and a quality addition in January could galvanize the squad and lift the morale of the squad.
The Reds have begun the second half of the Premier League season with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa earlier today, and they will be hoping to build on it in the coming weeks now.
