Premier League heavyweights Manchester United are reportedly optimistic about signing Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Manchester United will be hopeful of signing Frenkie de Jong next year. The Red Devils believe the final decision on a deal rests with the Dutch midfielder rather than Barcelona. And they reckon they might be able to turn his head.
Frenkie de Jong has been one of the hottest properties in the market since his days with Ajax. But that has not necessarily reflected in his stature at FC Barcelona this year. While the 25-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers for the Blaugrana, he remains a potential candidate to help them balance their books.
The Dutchman even started the 2022/23 season as a backup option but has gradually forced his way into Xavi Hernandez’s plans. He has chipped in with two goals and one assist in 17 outings thus far. The former Ajax midfielder also enjoyed a superb campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup with the Netherlands. Meanwhile, de Jong remains on the radar of Manchester United.
Manchester United desperately chased the Barcelona midfielder in the summer transfer window. They wanted to reunite de Jong with Erik ten Hag at the start of the season. But a move did not materialise as the player did not want to leave Barcelona, despite the Catalan outfit’s stance. However, Manchester United’s interest has not waned in the last few months.
Recent reports have claimed that Manchester United will soon establish contact with de Jong’s camp. And as the Red Devils look to intensify their interest in the Dutch international, their optimism is rising. They reckon the final decision rests with the Barcelona midfielder rather than the Blaugrana.
At the same time, the Premier League heavyweights believe that Barcelona will try to drive his price up by tying him to a new contract. But the new deal will see de Jong agree to pocket lower wages. And Manchester United will hope to see de Jong’s head turning.
Recent reports have claimed that the 25-year-old is open to joining Manchester United. And it will be interesting to see if he ends the uncertainties surrounding him at Camp Nou by leaving Barcelona and moving to Old Trafford.
