Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting CP and have stepped up their efforts to land him.
According to a report from O Jogo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham will look to sign Pedro Porro in January after a direct request from manager Antonio Conte. Sporting CP will let the Spanish full-back leave for around €35 million.
The Tottenham manager wants to sign a quality attacking full-back and has identified the 23-year-old as a target. Conte is reportedly impressed with the player’s performance against Spurs in the UEFA Champions League this season. The report adds that Tottenham have accelerated talks to sign the player, and Sporting CP are likely to demand around €35 million.
Antonio Conte’s contract is coming to an end in the summer, and Spurs are hoping to tie him down to a new deal. They will need to convince him of their ambitions in order to extend his contract and the signing of Porro in January could be crucial. Recent reports have claimed that Tottenham are close to signing the Spanish full-back.
The defender has a release clause of €45 million in his current contract. And it remains to be seen whether Spurs can negotiate a reasonable fee for him. Tottenham need to upgrade on Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal soon. Both players have been mediocre going forward, and Conte wants a full-back with more output in the final third.
Porro has nine assists to his name this season, and he would be a superb addition to the Tottenham squad. Furthermore, the Spaniard is young enough to improve further. He could prove to be a superb future investment for the London club.
Spurs certainly have the resources to sign the player, and Porro is likely to be tempted to join them as well. It would be a step up in his career, and he would get to work with a top-class coach at Tottenham. Furthermore, coming up against the best attackers in the Premier League will only accelerate his development as a defender.
Spurs are currently fourth in the league table and will be hoping to finish the season as strongly as possible. They will be looking to challenge for a trophy as well. If Tottenham can add to their squad in January, there is no reason why they cannot finish the season with a flourish.
