Newcastle United lead Memphis Depay chase

Newcastle United are leading the chase for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay as they aim to land the player in January.

As per SPORT, Newcastle United are stepping up their interest in Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay. The Dutch international is in the last year of his current contract and could leave the Catalan club for free.

Newcastle United’s Premier League journey has captivated football lovers as they have been a delight to watch. The Magpies have fought it out with the other bigwigs and have managed to grab a top-four place for the time being.

But they do not want to lose themselves in the crowd as Eddie Howe is looking to bring in some more reinforcements to ramp up their title bid. Their summer outlay will not disrupt their January funding as their wealthy owners have the financial muscle to power them to the pinnacle.

Memphis Depay has long been linked with a move away from Camp Nou as Barcelona want to take the player off their wage bill. Financial Fair Play rules will not allow Barcelona to fulfil their desire, and they need to raise funds. And offloading Depay could ease their burden to some extent.

Depay is said not to be interested in a January move as he wants to assess his situation in the summer. That could make him explore more possible options, as Atletico Madrid are also keeping a tab on the player.

The player’s wage demands could also be an emerging issue. But Newcastle United should be able to match his desired paycheck. With games coming thick and fast, the Magpies will be needing more bodies to cover up matches, and Depay deems a perfect fit.

But the Dutch forward’s early adventure in the Premier League did not have the expected ending, as after spending a couple of seasons with Manchester United, he boarded a flight to Lyon. However, the Barcelona forward will be adamant to make things even this time should he agree to a move to Tyneside.

Barcelona would demand a meagre fee for his service and are even ready to offer the player a share in the transfer fee to facilitate a move. However, the ball is still in Depay’s court and it remains to be seen whether he accepts this new adventure.
