La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have reportedly joined the race to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona in the January transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid over a possible move in the January transfer window. The Colchoneros view the Barcelona attacker as a potential replacement for Matheus Cunha.
Memphis Depay needs to resurrect his stuttering career after reaching his lowest point at FC Barcelona. The Dutchman ended the 2021/22 season as the joint-top scorer for the Blaugrana. But he has fallen in the pecking order after considerable outlay from Barcelona on attacking players.
The 28-year-old has managed only 131 minutes of game time across three appearances thus far this season. And after a decent campaign with the Netherlands at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Depay needs to find a new club. And the player’s situation at FC Barcelona has captured the attention of Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid will officially sell Matheus Cunha to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the January transfer window. And while the Brazilian striker has not been a consistent performer for them, Los Rojiblancos will still need to fill a vacant spot in the squad. Such a situation has forced Atletico Madrid into the market.
Several attackers have emerged on the Colchoneros’ radar, including Roberto Firmino. And Depay is also a viable target for Atletico Madrid heading into the January transfer window. In addition, the Dutchman’s desire to leave Barcelona to resurrect his career makes him an attractive option.
Recent reports have suggested that Depay wants to leave Barcelona as a free agent to recoup a handsome transfer bonus. But others have claimed that the Blaugrana will look to recoup a fee from his sale. Nonetheless, the 28-year-old is an appealing target for Atletico Madrid for the January transfer window.
Several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United, are also keen on signing Depay. So it will be interesting to see if Barcelona will be open to strengthening a direct rival midway through the season. For now, the Dutch attacker has emerged on the radar of Atletico Madrid for a winter move.
