Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be in touch with Manchester United in February when the two clubs meet in the UEFA Europa League.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United will initiate talks with Frenkie de Jong in February. The Red Devils are set to face Barcelona in the UEFA Europa League next year. And they reckon they can establish contact with the Dutch midfielder.
Frenkie de Jong remains at a crossroads in his career despite performing consistently for FC Barcelona. The 25-year-old was on the transfer list in the summer but remained defiant in his stance to remain at Spotify Camp Nou. So Barcelona failed to offload him despite trying to balance the books with his sale.
The Dutchman started the 2022/23 season as a backup option but has forced his way into Xavi Hernandez’s plans. The former Ajax midfielder has chipped in with two goals and one assist in 17 appearances thus far. And de Jong is coming off a solid 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign. So it is hardly surprising that he has emerged on the radar of Manchester United again.
Manchester United had been desperate to sign Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window, as Erik ten Hag wanted to reunite with the Barcelona midfielder. But the player had no interest in joining the Red Devils as they were playing in the UEFA Europa League. So Manchester United had to identify alternatives and bolstered the midfield unit by signing Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.
But de Jong remains firmly on Manchester United’s radar, which is hardly surprising. While Eriksen has been a pivotal figure for the Red Devils, the Barcelona midfielder can add another layer to the Red Devils’ midfield play. The Premier League heavyweights are thus keen on signing the 25-year-old again.
Recent reports have painted a contrasting picture of de Jong’s stance about joining Manchester United. But the most recent suggestions point towards him being open to moving to Old Trafford. And Manchester United will contact the Barcelona midfielder in February when the two teams meet in the Europa League.
With de Jong opening up to joining Manchester United, a move might be on the cards. And with Barcelona willing to cash in on the Dutchman, it will be interesting to see if the stars align for all parties.
