Manchester United might consider a move for Croatian shot-stopper Dominik Livakovic, who lit up the World Cup with his heroics in between the sticks.
As per Sportske Novosti, Dinamo Zagreb’s number one Dominik Livakovic has generated interest at Manchester United as the Premier League giants are still searching for an able competitor for David de Gea.
Livakovic’s strong displays were bound to invite suitors after Croatia defied all the odds to book a semi-final berth at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And the 27-year-old did have a strong hand in his country’s progress.
He rescued Croatia with a string of saves in the penalty shootout against Japan while being unbeatable as the Vatreni stunned Brazil in the World Cup quarterfinal. Livakovic has never left Croatia as his entire career has been based in his home country. But his World Cup exploits have led many to believe he has the credentials to represent a top European club.
Manchester United have not solved their goalkeeping situation as David de Gea’s current contractual situation is yet to be addressed. The Red Devils have already triggered the one-year extension clause for Fred, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford.
Livakovic’s ability to handle pressure situations has been the talk of the town. And with de Gea’s struggle in penalty shootouts handing Manchester United a rough time in the Europa League final, the 27-year-old might be a viable target.
The Croatian international’s current contract runs out in 2024, and Dinamo Zagreb could decide to cash in on him next summer. Manchester United have also monitored Diogo Costa’s progress at FC Porto. But the Portuguese international will command a much higher fee.
Livakovic is also good with his feet, and Erik ten Hag desperately wants a goalkeeper who could initiate the gameplay. De Gea has not been proficient in that aspect, although he has worked hard to improve his distribution skills. However, the Manchester United manager has had to compromise his playing style to some extent.
Livakovic’s arrival also would not pinch the Red Devils much as his wage demand should be much lesser than his other counterparts. And a very meagre amount should be enough to convince Dinamo Zagreb to let Croatia’s World Cup hero leave next year. In case a move fails to materialise, Illan Meslier might also emerge as the priority candidate.
