La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly considering signing Manchester United defender Luke Shaw in a Bosman move in the summer.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Luke Shaw is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are contemplating a possible Bosman move for the Manchester United defender heading into the 2023 summer transfer window.
Luke Shaw has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Manchester United from Southampton in July 2014. The English international had arrived at Old Trafford as one of Europe’s most promising young left-backs. But fitness issues and poor form have hampered him at times in the last eight and a half years.
However, Shaw has also had phases where he has been one of Europe’s best full-backs. And the 27-year-old has seemingly rediscovered his best form this season, chipping in with two assists in 15 outings for Manchester United. But Shaw is in the final few months of his Manchester United contract, with the situation alerting Barcelona.
Barcelona’s financial woes are showing no signs of disappearing. In addition, FFP rules in La Liga restrict the Blaugrana in the transfer market. So Barcelona will need to be clever again when the summer transfer window opens next year. And free agents will again become attractive options for them.
Several players have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar over a possible Bosman move next year. As far as left-backs are concerned, Raphael Guerreiro and Alejandro Grimaldo are two of the names on their shortlist. And Shaw is also an attractive option if he leaves Manchester United as a free agent.
The English international is coming into his own and has the right profile to replace Jordi Alba. Speaking of the veteran Spaniard, Barcelona will soon open contract termination talks with him. And Shaw might emerge in the equation to replace Alba if he runs down his Manchester United contract.
But amid the English international’s improving form, Manchester United will likely look to tie him to a new deal. So it will be interesting to see how Shaw’s contract situation evolves and whether he becomes an attractive target for Barcelona over a Bosman move in the summer.
