Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Fulham’s jet-heeled full-back Antonee Robinson after he impressed with the USMNT at the World Cup.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United are set to rival Inter Milan in the race to sign Fulham and USMNT left-back Antonee Robinson. The 25-year-old has caught the eye with his performances for both club and country this season.
The speedy left-back has been with Fulham since the summer of 2020, joining from Wigan Athletic in a deal worth £2 million. He quickly became a mainstay at left-back, taking over the starting berth from Joe Bryan. And Robinson helped the Cottagers secure promotion to the Premier League last season under Marco Silva.
During his two-and-a-half-year stint with Fulham so far, the USMNT star has experienced relegation, and promotion. And Robinson has now become a vital part of their Premier League renaissance under Marco Silva this season.
The defender has started 13 games for Fulham this season, with the west Londoners enjoying an incredible campaign back in the greener pastures of Premier League. They currently sit ninth in the league standings with 19 points heading into the World Cup break. The newly-promoted ouftit finally look set to snap their yo-yo jinx and avoid the drop.
Speaking of the World Cup, Robinson had a solid World Cup campaign with the USMNT and was perhaps one of his country’s most unheralded performers in Qatar. The pacy left-back played every minute of Gregg Berhalter’s side’s four matches in the tournament, helping them past a group that included England, Wales, and Iran before their chances of reaching the quarter-finals were cut short by a Round of 16 loss to the Netherlands on Saturday.
While names like Tyler Adams, Christian Pulisic, and Yunus Musah were regularly praised, the Fulham defender’s bombing displays remained somewhat under the radar. That said, his consistent performances have not gone unnoticed on the continent, with Inter Milan recently lining up a move for him.
The former Wigan defender came close to joining AC Milan from Wigan Athletic in January 2020 before the transfer fell through due to a failed medical. And while the 25-year-old remains open to moving to Serie A, Newcastle United have joined the transfer race and could offer him a chance to stay in the Premier League as well as take the next step in his career.
Despite Dan Burn’s superb performances this season and having signed Matt Targett permanently from Aston Villa over the summer, Newcastle seem to be on the lookout for a new and more adventurous left-back.
Robinson would perhaps be the perfect fit. The Milton Keynes-born defender is a flying full-back with his ability to bomb up and down the pitch, delivering balls into the box, and supremely athletic. He is a solid Premier League-level player.
That said, the 25-year-old would not be a huge upgrade on either Burn or Targett, or fringe left-back Jamal Lewis, who is similarly athletic but could not buy a game under boss Eddie Howe.
The Magpies have also been linked with Borna Sosa and Benfica left-back Alejandro Grimaldo over the last two months. Those will be more appealing alternatives for Newcastle due to their supreme crossing and progressive ability as Howe looks to build a squad capable of challenging for Europe.
