La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly tracking 20-year-old American attacker Giovanni Reyna at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Giovanni Reyna is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions have scouted the 20-year-old attacker at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And an approach may be on the cards if the scouts return to Madrid with a glowing report.
Giovanni Reyna was born in Durham but spent most of his formative years in the USA with New York City FC. The youngster moved to Europe by joining Borussia Dortmund in July 2019. And after some time in the Bundesliga club’s youth division, the American attacker graduated to the first-team squad a couple of years ago.
The 20-year-old has struggled with fitness issues since becoming a regular for Dortmund. But he is starting to find his way back this season and has featured 16 times thus far for the Black and Yellows. Meanwhile, Reyna’s progress has captured the attention of Real Madrid, who scouted him at the World Cup.
The Merengues have run the rule over several players in the ongoing month-long extravaganza in Qatar. And one of Real Madrid’s top targets at the World Cup is Cody Gakpo, who has been brilliant for the Netherlands. Los Blancos scouted the 23-year-old in the recent game between the Oranje and the USA. And another player popped up on Real Madrid’s radar in that game.
Real Madrid took the opportunity to run the rule over Giovanni Reyna, who featured as a substitute for the USMNT. The 20-year-old managed only 45 minutes of game time as the USA bowed out of the World Cup. But Real Madrid might still launch the offensive if the scouts submit a favourable report.
Reyna’s versatility makes him a viable target for Real Madrid as he can reprise three offensive roles. With Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio facing uncertain futures at the Santiago Bernabeu, the American attacker is a potential wide-attacking solution.
But the 20-year-old is a revered member of the first-team squad for Borussia Dortmund. So the Bundesliga giants might put up obstacles for Real Madrid if Reyna becomes a top target for the Spanish champions.
