Liverpool consider cancelling Billy Koumetio loan deal

Liverpool are considering a recall for Billy Koumetio and plan to terminate his loan deal with Austria Vienna before January.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are seriously considering ending Billy Koumetio’s loan deal at Austria Vienna early. The highly-rated 20-year-old defensive prospect has barely played since early September, with his development stalling at the Austrian club.

Billy Koumetio is a highly-rated prospect at Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp has lots of hopes for the defender, and many consider him to become a part of future teams.

He did become an important part of Austria Vienna’s plans early in the season, taking over 1000 minutes across all competitions. Overall, he has played in 15 games this term, which is healthy enough for a loan prospect. However, since early September, he has featured in one game, which has left Liverpool worried.

Moreover, the Austrian outfit demoted him to the youth side, which will hurt his confidence further. Hence, Liverpool are seriously considering terminating the loan deal early and recalling the 20-year-old defensive prospect.

The idea is to re-evaluate his options and find another club to continue his development. There could be a few clubs likely to take him on board, particularly from outside of England.

The Reds have faced defensive issues this season, with all their centre-backs in disappointing form. Their tepid performances have pushed them out of the running for the Premier League title, but a top-four chase may remain a possibility.

They are in the market to shore up the squad in January, but there seems to be no interest in signing a new defender. Klopp still trusts the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate to turn the season around.

Hence, there may be no place for Koumetio in the current setup. However, if one or more of their current choices leave next summer, space could open up for the 20-year-old defensive prospect to stake a claim in the first team.

Koumetio has a contract until 2025, so Liverpool are very much relaxed about his long-term future. If he is to join a new side and perform well, a new contract could also become possible.

Koumetio is considered a future star and is expected to play for the Liverpool first team. The 20-year-old defensive prospect will currently find himself behind the current centre-backs in the pecking order. Hence it makes complete sense to play elsewhere for the time being
