Barcelona weigh up Frenkie de Jong sale

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly pondering on selling Frenkie de Jong, a target for Manchester United.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona will consider selling Frenkie de Jong to accommodate Bernardo Silva next year. The Dutch midfielder is a target for Manchester United. But he is not interested in moving to Old Trafford, as was the case in the summer.

Frenkie de Jong does not seem to be catching a break despite some promising performances. The 25-year-old has regained his best form at the club level and seems to be in Xavi Hernandez’s plans. But Barcelona might still look to cash in on him next year as they pursue Bernardo Silva.

The Dutch midfielder has turned out 18 times for Barcelona across all competitions, regaining his spot as a starter. And de Jong is currently in Qatar to represent the Netherlands at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and scored a goal against Qatar on Tuesday. But his future at the club level remains uncertain amid interest from Manchester United.

Manchester United desperately attempted to sign de Jong in the summer transfer window. But a move failed to materialise despite sustained efforts for months as the Barcelona midfielder was not interested in joining the Red Devils. However, the continued interest makes sense as Manchester United can do with a player who can progress the play from midfield.

The 25-year-old is the ideal player to fit in Erik ten Hag’s system, considering he flourished under his compatriot at Ajax. But recent reports have claimed that the Dutchman is an impossible January target for Manchester United.

In addition, de Jong has reportedly turned down Manchester United again recently. So Barcelona’s stance of possibly selling the player next year might not come as a boost for Manchester United. Nonetheless, the Red Devils might still look to pounce and prise the Dutch midfielder away from Barcelona.

However, other suitors like Liverpool, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain might have a better chance of landing de Jong. That said, Manchester United might focus on clinching a top-four finish to convince the Barcelona midfielder to move to Old Trafford.
