Liverpool will have to pay €32 million to sign Joao Gomes

Liverpool could sign midfield target Joao Gomes for €32 million, with the Brazilian reportedly open to joining the Reds.

According to Jorge Nicola, as relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool will have to pay €32 million to sign Joao Gomes. The South American midfielder has remained on their radar for quite a while. The player is reportedly open to the move, as per previous reports.

Joao Gomes is proving his mettle at Flamengo after helping them win the Copa Libertadores at the end of October. Following some impressive performances, interest from across the continent remained consistent. Liverpool are one of the clubs following his trail.

As the interest from top clubs grew, Flamengo were wise enough to secure Gomes to a new contract until 2027 with a €60 million release clause. The Brazilian outfit know that no club will pay such sums and is willing to accept a lower offer.

As per the report, a €32 million bid would suffice, and Flamengo could accept the offer. Despite positive overtures from Liverpool, journalist Jorge Nicola claims the Reds have yet to make an offer. Whether Jurgen Klopp will urge the club to make such an offer is not clear.

While the interest is evident, considering Liverpool have followed Gomes for quite a while, they are also chasing other targets in the market. The midfield position has proved problematic for Klopp this season, and he could consider signing someone in January.

Only Thiago Alcantara has performed well this term. The likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have put in below-par displays. While Klopp addressed the problems by bringing in Arthur Melo on loan, the Juventus loanee has since suffered a severe injury.

They were missing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita through fitness troubles. And Liverpool’s setup in the middle looks weak, compelling them to bring in a new midfielder. Whether Klopp is ready to invest in the South American midfielder or a Premier League-ready player like, say, Ruben Neves remains the question.

Recently, Gomes opened up about his dreams of playing for Liverpool, which could become a reality if the Reds cough up the required €32 million. He also has ambitions to feature in the UEFA Champions League and win it at some stage, for which the Reds would be an ideal choice.

However, there is still plenty of time before now and in January. Liverpool could remain active and target a midfielder. While Gomes will be a great fit for the longer term, he may not be the solution at that price to solve their problems in a short time.
