Barcelona will reportedly have to fend off stiff competition from Atletico Madrid to sign 25-year-old Spanish midfielder Aleix Garcia from Girona.
According to a report by Spanish publication AS, Aleix Garcia is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid over a possible Bosman move in the 2023 summer transfer window. The 25-year-old Girona midfielder is also a target for Barcelona.
Aleix Garcia has found a stable footing since joining Girona from SD Eibar in July 2021. Currently in his second stint with the Catalan outfit, the player has been a pivotal figure for the White and Reds. And the Spanish midfielder has enjoyed a solid 2022/23 campaign thus far, establishing himself as one of the most dependable performers in La Liga.
The 25-year-old has chipped in with three assists in 15 appearances thus far, featuring in every game this season for Girona. But the Blanquivermells are in a spot of bother over Garcia’s long-term future, as he is in the final few months of his contract. Such a situation has captured the attention of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona might make multiple midfield reinforcements in the summer transfer window next year. While Sergio Busquets’s waning performance levels call for signing a defensive midfielder, the Blaugrana will likely also need a box-to-box midfielder. To that end, Aleix Garcia has emerged as a viable target.
The 25-year-old Spanish midfielder might become a free agent next year, thus making him an even more appealing target for Barcelona. But the Catalan giants face stiff competition from La Liga rival Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Garcia.
Like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid will have a big summer transfer window next year. The Colchoneros have struggled to make their mark this season, and Diego Simeone’s future is up in the air. But the Argentine tactician will likely prioritise signing a midfielder if he remains at Atletico Madrid. With Rodrigo De Paul, Saul Niguez, and others likely to leave, Garcia is an option worth considering.
The Colchoneros also have other midfielders on their radar, including Enzo Fernandez, a target for Barcelona. But signing Garcia will free up funds to pursue other targets. And it will be interesting to see if Atletico Madrid can beat the Blaugrana to the 25-year-old Spanish midfielder.
