Tottenham Hotspur have held an initial discussion with the entourage of Stefan de Vrij in an attempt to sign the player in January.
As per Football Insider, Tottenham have approached Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij as Antonio Conte is very eager to reunite with his former disciple. The Dutch defender’s current contract is up for expiry next summer, and he is yet to be offered an extension.
Spurs are expected to have a busy January as the manager is not happy with the current squad depth and could fulfil his long-standing interest in the player. Inter are pretty keen to offer de Vrij fresh terms, but talks have not taken place yet. And time is running out as the 30-year-old would be free to sign a pre-contract with any club in January.
Inter cannot allow the Dutch defender to leave for free at all as the Italian giants are deeply submerged in a financial mess and could sanction his sale for a meagre price.
Recent defensive debacles prompted Conte to find a new solution in the transfer market and de Vrij is a tailor-made choice for the Tottenham manager. The Dutch defender is used to Conte’s system and is very familiar with the three-man defence system.
Tottenham brought in Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona, but their habit of conceding silly goals has continued and Eric Dier has also been quite error-prone this time. The north Londoners crashed out of the Carabao Cup after a below-par performance against Nottingham Forest. But to restrict further blunders, they will invest in bringing in reinforcements this winter.
Davinson Sanchez is no more a guaranteed starter, and Conte will need someone whose stature will be at par with the opponent players. If Inter do not sanction a move, the former Feyenoord defender could join the Premier League outfit on a free transfer next summer.
The experienced defender will solely concentrate on the World Cup now, having been selected for his country. His stock could further rise after the World Cup, and the Nerazzurri might decide to earn some quick money by agreeing to a deal for the player.
