Lens midfielder Seko Fofana has been added to Liverpool’s growing list of potential midfielders.
According to journalist Ignazio Genuardi, Liverpool have identified Lens midfielder Seko Fofana as a possible candidate for their midfield. The Reds will have to bring in reinforcements as a number of players are expected to leave Anfield.
Lens have outperformed everyone this season as they have maintained a steady distance with the table toppers Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. Fofana has attracted attention with a string of good performances and his excellent display hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Liverpool talent hunters.
The Merseysiders have an extensive lineup of midfielders but lack depth when it comes to offering quality on the pitch. James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contracts will expire next summer and they are unlikely to be retained by the club.
Both Thiago and Fabinho have had their issues and Jurgen Klopp has to add some muscle in the middle of the pitch. The manager might want to bring in a player in January but given the World Cup hovering on the horizon, it could be a complicated situation for most of the clubs.
Stealing Fofana from under the grasp of Lens won’t be easy as the 27-year-old extended his stay for a further three years this summer and the French club could demand hefty compensation.
The midfielder is not new to English football and earlier had a brief stint with the Manchester City youth side and Fulham. The Lens captain might be on his way back to England but Liverpool might have to splash the cash if they really need his services in January.
But Lens wouldn’t want any disruption in their season and therefore could reject all the advances until the summer. The player has already proven that he can thrive at the highest level and his ability will surely be tested once he joins the English Premier League giants.
Arsenal and Newcastle United were interested in bringing the player from France, and it remains to be seen whether they renew their interest.
