London giants Tottenham Hotspur are one of three clubs keen on signing Uruguayan defender Jose Maria Gimenez from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Jose Maria Gimenez is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur over a possible move in the 2023 summer transfer window. Juventus and AS Roma also keen on signing the Uruguayan defender from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.
Jose Maria Gimenez has spent nearly a decade at Atletico Madrid but is yet to properly make his mark at the Spanish club. The 27-year-old joined Los Rojiblancos from Danubio ahead of the 2013/14 season as a promising young centre-back. But he has been in and out of the side in the last ten seasons.
The Uruguayan defender has turned out over 250 times for Atletico Madrid, chipping in with ten goals and nine assists. But Gimenez remains a regular for his national side and should feature at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And despite blowing hot and cold at the club level, the player remains a top target, including for Tottenham.
Tottenham signed Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona in the summer transfer window. But there is no guarantee that the Frenchman will join the north London club permanently next year. In addition, Japhet Tanganga is out of favour with Antonio Conte, while Davinson Sanchez is inconsistent.
So with Cristian Romero and Eric Dier being the only consistent performers, Tottenham will have to invest in a centre-back next summer. And while recent reports have claimed that Conte wants three new signings in the January transfer window, signing a new central defender might only be a priority for next summer.
Several centre-backs, including Alessandro Bastoni, have thus emerged on Tottenham’s radar. And Gimenez is also a viable target. While the Uruguayan international might not be one of the best defenders in La Liga, he is still a solid customer at the back. But Tottenham will be in a three-way battle for the 27-year-old.
Gimenez is also a target for Serie A giants AS Roma and Juventus. So UEFA Champions League qualification might play a big role in where Gimenez goes next if he leaves Atletico Madrid. Tottenham might hold the aces in such a scenario.
