Manchester United are keeping an eye on Benfica star Enzo Fernandez.
According to 90min, Premier League giants Manchester United are keeping a close watch on Benfica star Enzo Fernandez as he continues to go from strength to strength.
The 21-year-old joined Benfica from River Plate earlier this year and has since made 21 appearances for the club, scoring thrice and assisting four more. It would not be an understatement to claim that the Argentine has taken to European football like a fish to water.
A central midfielder who can play anywhere along the line, Fernandez is a handful to go up against. Good on the ball and a terrific tackler, the South American has the tools at his disposal to become an all-action presence in the middle of the park.
The Red Devils are currently rebuilding under Erik ten Hag and could do with a player of Fernandez’s abilities. It is no secret that the Red Devils are in the market for a midfielder, given their summer-long pursuit of Frenkie De Jong.
While Casemiro was brought in, the Brazilian is more of a destroyer rather than a technician. Fernandez, on the other hand, can help the Red Devils dictate the pace of the game and give them an outlet to craft opportunities from deep.
At 21, Fernandez is far from the finished product. It is not easy for a young player to come to a new league and take it by storm. The very act that he has been able to do so speaks volumes about his potential.
The Argentine is also an upgrade over Fred and Scott McTominay, who both lack the dynamism and vision to make a telling impact in the middle of the park. Man United will not have it easy, with several other top teams also in the fray for the Benfica man.
While De Jong’s future at Barcelona remains far from certain, whether there is enough substance for Man United to retain hopes of landing him is debatable. With Fernandez’s stock on the rise, the Red Devils will do well to act fast and land the player for themselves.
