Serie A champions AC Milan reportedly want to sign Spanish attacker Marco Asensio from Real Madrid in the 2023 summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Marco Asensio is the subject of interest from AC Milan. The Serie A champions are keen on signing the Real Madrid attacker in a Bosman move in the 2023 summer transfer window.
Marco Asensio was once the future of Spanish football as he produced some remarkable displays in his early years as a Real Madrid footballer. But a long-term knee injury in 2019 has derailed the 26-year-old’s career. While the Spaniard enjoyed his most productive campaign thus far for Real Madrid, he has not been consistent enough.
To make matters worse, Asensio has fallen down the pecking order amid a long-standing impasse over his contractual situation. As a result, the Spanish international has started only one of 18 games for Real Madrid this season. And the Merengues are in a spot of bother over his long-term future. In addition, with the player in the final months of his deal, AC Milan will look to sign him next summer.
Several clubs, including AC Milan, pursued the Real Madrid attacker in the summer transfer window. But a move did not materialise, and Asensio remained at the Santiago Bernabeu. The continued interest from the Serie A giants is hardly surprising, considering the inconsistencies of the offensive unit.
Alexis Saelemaekers and Junior Messias primarily occupy the right-wing berth for AC Milan. But neither player has been convincing enough for Stefano Pioli to back them for the long haul. The Serie A champions will thus need to dip their toes in the market for a wide-attacking addition, bringing Asensio into the picture.
The Real Madrid attacker has also emerged on the radars of various Premier League clubs. But the chance to join AC Milan will allow the 26-year-old to start from scratch. And with the Rossoneri consistently qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, Asensio will have enough motivation to move to San Siro.
But recent reports have claimed that Real Madrid might table a contract offer to the Spaniard. The reigning La Liga champions might also bolster his wages. So it will be interesting to see what Asensio decides amid the latest links with Serie A giants AC Milan.
