Newcastle United keen on Ajejandro Grimaldo

Newcastle United are reportedly tracking the progress of Benfica left-back Alejandro Grimaldo.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Alejandro Grimaldo could be on his way to the Premier League as Newcastle United could sign the Spanish left-back on a free transfer next summer.

The 27-year-old will be out of contract next summer, and a cut-price deal could be agreed upon in January. The Spanish defender has not agreed on a new deal, and it is imminent he will leave the club for free.

Newcastle are pretty well stocked in the left-back section. But Eddie Howe’s demands of a certain type of footballing style could be fulfilled by the arrival of the 27-year-old.

Grimaldo came through the academy of Barcelona but never featured for the senior team. The Spanish left-back has all the qualities to flourish in the Premier League, and Howe could bring forward the player’s pursuit if he feels the need.

Another advantage that could work in the Magpies’ favour is that both the player and the manager share the same agent. And this might help in accelerating a deal for the defender.

Juventus are also battling for the player and could produce a formal contract offer to him. 2022/23 could be Alex Sandro’s last season in Italy, and a large void needs to be filled.

The Spanish defender has been pretty consistent and has already churned out four assists and one goal in all competitions this term. Juventus could undergo an entire overhaul next term, and Grimaldo’s arrival could be part of that.

Newcastle have challenged the Premier League biggies this season and have already flexed their muscle with a win over Tottenham Hotspur. Solitary points against both Manchester clubs have put them in the top four, and they have to maintain this momentum till the end of the season.

Benfica have not proposed a new contract to the player, and he might be ready to end his six-year stint at the Portuguese club. Barcelona were also very keen to take their academy product back to Camp Nou as uncertainty regarding Jordi Alba’s future has made them pretty anxious and they are in search of a perfect replacement. It will be interesting to see where Grimaldo lands in 2023.
