Real Madrid set to offer three-year deal to Marco Asensio

La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly set to submit a three-year deal to out-of-favour Spanish attacker Marco Asensio.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Cadena SER, Marco Asensio might remain at Real Madrid after all. The reigning La Liga champions are ready to hand the out-of-favour Spanish winger a three-year deal. They will also offer higher wages than the one he currently pockets.

Marco Asensio is a classic case of “what could have been” for a professional footballer. The 26-year-old was supposed to be the future of Spanish football when he broke onto the scene over half a dozen years ago. But a long-term knee injury has subsequently given way to inconsistency.

The Spanish international has struggled to recapture top form in the last couple of seasons. And after entering the final year of his Real Madrid contract, he has fallen down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu. Asensio has started only once this season, garnering 217 minutes of game time.

The player still has a decent tally of two goals and one assist in 12 outings across all competitions. But Asensio’s contract situation has left Real Madrid in a spot of bother, as he is open to leaving as a free agent. Such a situation has captured the attention of several Premier League bigwigs.

Asensio has also caught the eye of a few Serie A giants, including Juventus. Recent reports have even suggested that a shock Bosman move to Barcelona might be on the cards for the player. Amid all this, Real Madrid will look to secure his future and preserve his value by offering him a new contract.

The report claims that the Merengues want to tie Asensio to a new three-year deal. Real Madrid will also offer the 26-year-old a higher salary than the one he currently takes home. So the ball will soon be in Asensio’s court, with Real Madrid willing to hand him an attractive contract.

Carlo Ancelotti has previously confirmed Asensio’s desire to leave Real Madrid. But things might change with Los Blancos ready to offer the out-of-favour attacker a new and appealing contract. It will be interesting to see if the Spaniard decides to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu beyond this season.
