Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is concerned with his limited game time this season and is weighing up his future.
According to Give Me Sport, Harry Maguire is rethinking his Manchester United future and could seek an exit next summer. The English defender has fallen down the pecking order and is currently battling with an injury.
Since his arrival from Leicester City, the English international has faced severe criticism for his on-field performance. Maguire has failed to justify his astronomical transfer fee with consistent displays on the pitch. And the Red Devils have had to bring in two central defenders Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as reinforcements.
Maguire has not started a game in the English top flight since the harrowing 4-0 loss to Brentford, with Erik ten Hag mostly preferring Varane and Martinez in the backline.
Even Victor Lindelof seems to be ahead of Maguire in the pecking order, and the 29-year-old is no more an obvious choice in the starting lineup. He has not started training since being injured but could be available for the Chelsea match this weekend as it stands.
Chelsea were reportedly interested in taking the Manchester United captain under their fold. But a late move for Wesley Fofana might have restricted any further attempt.
Maguire does have a lengthy contract till 2025, but the club hierarchy does not want to take any quick action on his imminent future. This season could emerge to be a pretty tricky one given the 2022 FIFA World Cup is sandwiched in between. And ten Hag might need the services of the player pretty often.
Despite his struggles at Old Trafford, Maguire remains in the plans of England head coach Gareth Southgate. The Manchester United captain is in the good books of the manager, and unless any major turnaround happens he will be on his way to the World Cup.
As there is a dearth of experienced English defenders, Maguire could use the platform in Qatar to re-establish his rhythm and send a stern message to ten Hag. He is unlikely to be haste in taking a decision. But if the situation remains the same throughout this season, a call on his future could take place next summer.
