Liverpool have reportedly held exploratory talks in their pursuit of Florentino Luis from Benfica as Jurgen Klopp eyes a midfield revamp.
According to O Jogo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool are interested in signing Florentino Luis from Benfica. The report claims the Reds have had exploratory talks with the Portuguese giants for the midfielder as Jurgen Klopp eyes fundamental changes to that area of his squad.
Liverpool have had problems with a proper midfield setup this season. Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara had injury struggles earlier this season. But while the latter is back, there are still problems with their form. Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have failed to hit their usual heights, while Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott are very young to deal with the pressure.
Liverpool did bring in Arthur Melo late in the window, but the Brazilian midfielder has since suffered an injury that will keep him out for months. The solutions to revamping the midfield may not sufficiently arrive in January, and Jurgen Klopp may have to wait until the summer to bring viable solutions.
Liverpool are keeping a close watch on Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez and Florentino Luis. Liverpool reportedly held exploratory contacts for the latter, with a considerable release clause worth a reported €120 million being embedded in his contract. The figure is steep, and the Reds may not pay up. So they will undoubtedly negotiate to bring it down to a reasonable level.
Liverpool are also eyeing several other prominent names in the market. Those include Frenkie de Jong, Jude Bellingham, and many others. The age profiles of all those players are on the younger side, as Klopp desperately needs to revamp his options.
Luis has not been a regular at Benfica until this season. After promising loans at AS Monaco and Getafe in the last two years, he has formed a solid partnership with Enzo Fernandez in the Benfica midfield, featuring in all 17 matches this season.
The 23-year-old Portuguese midfielder has lofty ambitions, and a move to the Premier League would appeal to the midfielder. Whether Liverpool can negotiate a fair price with Benfica remains the question, although the Reds have previously shown they can broker deals with the Portuguese clubs.
