Manchester City set sights on Bruno Guimaraes

Manchester City are reportedly the favourites to sign in-form Newcastle United playmaker Bruno Guimaraes.

Manchester City have reportedly set their sights on Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that the reigning Premier League champions are ‘the most realistic danger for Newcastle’ in their bid to keep the Brazilian at St James’ Park on a long-term basis.

Formerly of Athletico Paranaense, Guimaraes is gaining traction with each game since his big-money move to Newcastle United from Lyon back in January. The Brazilian has been a revelation for the Magpies and has played a big part in their rise from a relegation-threatened club to one challenging at the top end of the Premier League.

The Brazilian playmaker immediately showed his class and has since become a fan favourite at St James’ Park. He has netted seven goals and registered two assists in 24 appearances, most recently toying with Brentford while bagging a brace in a 5-1 thrashing of the Bees, with the Magpies currently sitting sixth in the Premier League table after nine matches, just two points adrift of the top four.

Guimaraes has formed a dominant midfield three alongside compatriot Joelinton and workhorse Joe Willock — a trio renowned for suffocating and overwhelming even the best of midfielders in the division.

Needless to say, he has quickly established himself as not just Newcastle’s best player, but also one of the Premier League’s top midfielders. Is it any wonder that Real Madrid were interested in him as a replacement for Casemiro last summer? – It’s a testament to his incredible well-rounded ability and how well he’s performed in his brief time on Tyneside as of yet.

Los Merengues are still believed to hold an interest in Guimaraes along with Juventus, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain, but the Daily Mail claims that Man City have entered the long list of his admirers and emerged as the “most realistic danger” to Newcastle, who are determined to retain their star midfielder.

Despite acquiring Kalvin Phillips only last summer, the Citizens are on the lookout for central midfielders, with captain Ilkay Gundogan out of contract next summer and Bernardo Silva’s long-term future up in the air amid Barcelona interest.

The Sky Blues have recently been linked with moves for Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, and Guimaraes is the latest name to have been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium.

However, Newcastle supporters need not be too worried about losing their star man, with the report adding that the Magpies’ Saudi-backed owners are under no pressure to sell Guimaraes, who is contracted at St James Park until June 2026, and are believed to be planning to offer the 24-year-old a new deal at the end of the season.

Further, the player himself is intent on becoming a “legend” at the club and aiding the Magpies in their rise back to their historic heights.
