Marco Asensio has been linked with a move away from Real Madrid, with Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham keen on signing him.
According to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato, Premier League giants Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are keen on signing Spanish attacker Marco Asensio from Real Madrid in the January transfer window.
The 26-year-old has found it hard to hold down a regular starting berth at Real Madrid, and he needs to leave the club to play more often. Asensio is one of the most talented players to have risen in stature at the Santiago Bernabeu in recent years, and he has managed to impress with his cameos over the last few seasons.
Premier League bigwigs like Tottenham and Liverpool can certainly use his creativity and technical ability in the final third. It will be interesting to see if they can strike an agreement with Real Madrid for Asensio in the coming months.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are already well stocked in the attacking department, with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Marquinhos at Mikel Arteta’s disposal. The Gunners should look to add more depth to their central midfield unit instead amid links with Douglas Luiz. And it would be surprising if they invested in another wide attacker.
Asensio has barely had any game time at Real Madrid this season, and he has played a combined total of 48 minutes in the UEFA Champions League and La Liga. The Spaniard is yet to make a single start for Los Blancos in those competitions. A player of his ability needs to play more often to fulfil his tremendous potential, and a move to the Premier League could provide him with a fresh start.
Tottenham have an excellent midfield base, but Antonio Conte is missing some creativity in the final third. Someone like Asensio could improve them with his key passing and flair. Meanwhile, Liverpool have looked bereft of creativity this season, and the Real Madrid attacker seems like an ideal option for them as well.
The 26-year-old is entering his peak years, and he could establish himself as a key player for any of Arsenal, Liverpool or Tottenham. Furthermore, world-class managers like Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp could help the Real Madrid forward regain his sharpness and improve further.
Asensio’s contract expires in the summer of 2023, and he has already refused an extension with Real Madrid. The likes of Juventus, Barcelona and AC Milan are keen on securing his services as well, and the player will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club when the January transfer window opens.
It will be interesting to see if Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool wait it out until the summer to sign him on a free transfer. Alternatively, they could spend a nominal fee and secure the services of the Real Madrid attacker during the winter transfer window to fend off some competition.
