Newcastle are reportedly weighing up a potential £50 million bid for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Ukraine winger Mykhaylo Mudryk.
Newcastle United are the latest English club to express interest in Shakhtar Donetsk and Ukraine winger Mykhaylo Mudryk. That’s according to iNews, which claims the Magpies’ owners could be willing to spend as much as £50 million for the 21-year-old, although they may need to fend off interest from other Premier League suitors like Liverpool and Arsenal.
The Ukraine international has blossomed into one of the most exciting talents across Europe following his meteoric rise, with a number of elites keeping a close watch on his progress. He broke through last season after progressing through the Shakhtar Donetsk system.
With two goals and three assists already this season, Mudryk is making waves in his native Ukraine and abroad thanks to his sparkling Champions League displays. He netted in back-to-back Champions League games against RB Leipzig and Celtic, demonstrating his ability to contribute in Europe’s elite competition on top of his tremendous potential.
A player with such a high ceiling seldom escapes the watchful eyes of Premier League scouts, so it goes without saying that the 21-year-old has already been the subject of bids from clubs such as Brentford and Everton, the latter of whom had a £26 million offer for the winger rejected in the summer transfer window.
Not just the aforementioned clubs, but several Premier League teams have set their sights on Mudryk. Various reports claim that Newcastle and Arsenal are also interested in signing the 21-year-old, who dreams of playing in the English top-flight one day.
For that to happen, it will take a bid near to the €50 million mark to tempt Shakhtar to sell their prized asset, who still has more than four years left to run on his contract.
Arsenal, for one, made a host of high-profile acquisitions across the pitch, but it is well-documented that they wanted to add another right-winger to lessen Bukayo Saka’s burden. Leeds United star Raphinha was Arteta’s prime target, but as it became evident that he was headed to Barcelona, Mudryk became a viable option.
The speculation only escalated following the departure of club-record-singing Nicolas Pepe to Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice on a season-long loan deal. As the record shows, nothing materialized, but they could well revisit their interest in the 21-year-old in the coming transfer windows.
The same goes for Newcastle United, who failed in their summer pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen right-winger Moussa Diaby. They are willing to spend an absolute fortune to acquire the Ukraine sensation in order to make another statement after completing a club-record deal for Alexander Isak this summer.
Mudryk’s talent is there for all to see, and a big move now looks to be on the cards for him sooner rather than later. The only thing left to determine is which club wins the race for him.
