Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Sheffield United defender John Egan before the summer transfer window closes tonight.
According to a report from the Daily Express, Leeds United are weighing up a surprise bid for Sheffield United centre-back John Egan. The Whites believe that they can prise the 29-year-old away from Bramall Lane to the greener pastures of the Premier League, but it is unclear if their pursuit will come to fruition.
The Leeds faithful will be hoping for a busy end to the transfer window for the Whites. There is a feeling that Jesse Marsch needs another attacking player. Patrick Bamford continues to struggle with injury and fitness issues, while Rodrigo dislocated his shoulder during the midweek 1-1 draw against Everton.
Furthermore, Daniel James is still being courted by Tottenham Hotspur, highlighting the desperate need for more depth at the top end of the pitch. Instead, Ireland international defender John Egan has been strongly linked with a surprising summer transfer deadline day move from Sheffield United to Leeds, who are considering tabling an offer for the 29-year-old defender.
Egan has been a regular fixture at Bramall Lane for a number of years now, having joined the Blades permanently in 2018. He also had a previous loan spell at the same club way back in 2012. Since his return to Sheffield United, Egan has made 174 appearances in all competitions and was a vital part of the side that featured in the Premier League for two seasons under Chris Wilder.
Last season, the 29-year-old featured in all 46 Championship games for the Blades, helping them reach the play-off semi-finals. He is one of Paul Heckingbottom’s most key players this season, and he often captains the side when Billy Sharp is out. Egan also has 26 caps for the Republic of Ireland’s national team.
Leeds’s interest in Egan stems from their consistent injury struggles in the defensive area of their squad. Liam Cooper is still battling for fitness, while Luke Ayling, Junior Firpo, and Stuart Dallas are also on the treatment table, with Dallas missing for an extended period of time.
It has been reported by the Express that Leeds United have identified the Ireland international as a transfer target to add to their existing roster. Bringing in Egan may offer some much-needed depth to their defensive options. And considering his Premier League experience and ability, the 29-year-old would appear to be a viable target.
His current contract at Bramall Lane expires in 2024. However, he is absolutely vital to the Blades’ promotion hopes, having played every minute for Sheffield United so far this season. They are currently flying high in the second tier, and hold a one-point lead over Norwich City at the top of the table.
Egan commands the entire back five and is an imperious presence at the back for them. So, it is safe to say Heckingbottom will certainly not want to see his stand-in skipper leave this late in the transfer window. That would scupper their positive start to the season. This is why it seems highly unlikely that anything could materialise here.
