Liverpool could make a late move for RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer, with Jurgen Klopp looking for reinforcements to bolster his squad.
According to 90 min, Liverpool are interested in signing 25-year-old Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig as they chase midfield reinforcements before the end of the summer transfer window.
Liverpool’s hunt for midfield reinforcements is ramping up after their injury-hit start to the current season, with the club reportedly accelerating their transfer plans for Jude Bellingham while exploring the possibility of bringing in the Borussia Dortmund playmaker as early as in the January transfer window.
Recent reports claimed that Liverpool have reached a “verbal agreement” to sign long-term target Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund, who would likely cost them to the north of £100 million. But the Bundesliga outfit have maintained that they will only entertain bids for their player next summer, having already sold a big star in Erling Haaland to Manchester City.
Aside from Bellingham, Liverpool are also considering their current options, with the understanding that they might need more than one midfielder by next season. This is because James Milner and Jordan Henderson are into their thirties. Meanwhile Naby Keita, who is into the final year of his contract, could still push for a move away from Anfield before the end of the transfer window.
As such, RB Leipzig’s versatile midfielder, Konrad Laimer, has emerged as a potential target for Liverpool. The Reds are looking to capitalise on their strong ties with the Red Bull group in the transfer market.
The 25-year-old is the subject of heavy interest from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, who had not one but three bids for the enforcer rejected by Die Roten Bullen, with the latest proposal worth up to €28 million. But the deal is now understood to be off the table, paving the pathway for Jurgen Klopp to bolster the Liverpool midfield.
Laimer is coming off a fruitful season at the Red Bull Arena, contributing with four goals and four assists in 26 Bundesliga games. He has shown he is capable of playing as a holding midfielder as well as a box-to-box midfielder and even as a full-back, offering an extra element of versatility to Klopp’s side.
The Austrian international is a highly energetic midfielder and a ball-winning disruptor who has the ability to cover vast swathes of the field and press intensely with purpose. But Laimer does not only have the energy, he also possesses the speed and technical qualities, which makes him a tailor-made option for Jurgen Klopp’s gegenpressing style at Liverpool.
With his contract running out in 2023, the 25-year-old could be available for a discount price as the Bundesliga club could be tempted to sell the player now in order to avoid losing him for free next summer. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can succeed in bringing the Austrian international from Leipzig to the Anfield in the coming days.
