Premier League duo Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are interested in Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos but trail Sevilla in their pursuit.
According to 90 min, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are in contention to sign Scottish Premier League striker Alfredo Morelos who continues to make a name for himself north of the border. They, however, trail Spanish club Sevilla in this three-way race.
The 26-year-old joined the Scottish giants from Finnish side HJK in 2017 and has since established himself as one of the finest marksmen in the SPL. Morelos played a key role in Rangers not only returning to the top flight but also beating Celtic to the 2020/21 league championship.
In his five seasons at the Ibrox, the Colombian attacker has been Rangers’ top scorer four times. A prolific goalscorer, he is a fine presence up front and is a difficult player for opposition defences to pin down. Capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, Morelos also offers enough versatility to thrive in the modern game.
The Colombian is unsettled at the Ibrox and was left out of the Champions League playoff against PSV Eindhoven. Morelos also has a patchy red card record, with his latest coming in their game against Hibernian earlier this month. It can be argued that the striker, for all his perks, is a liability, and his time at Rangers could be coming to an end.
Steven Gerrard got the best out of the player during his time at Rangers, and they could rekindle that relationship at Aston Villa. The Midlands outfit have enjoyed a brilliant summer, but it is yet to translate onto the field. Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings have both failed to start the season brightly, and adding Morelos to the lineup will give Aston Villa some bite in attack.
His combative nature makes him an interesting addition to the Premier League. It could as be used against him by rival defenders. Darwin Nunez fell prey to Joachim Andersen’s provocations at Anfield, and one could argue that Morelos is much more of a loose cannon.
This does not appear to have discouraged another Premier League side, Crystal Palace, who are also in the fray for the 26-year-old. Patrick Vieira could be the right manager to channel Morelos’s fury in the right direction and make him a top-flight success. He will add more impetus to a side that already has Wilfried Zaha and Odsonne Edouard in their ranks.
It is Sevilla that currently leads the race to land the Colombian international. Unlike Villa and Palace, the Andalusians can also offer the player the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League this season. Giving up the same at Ibrox to move to England is, on paper, a step down for the player. Sevilla have endured a difficult start to the season, picking up just one point in their first two games. Landing Morelos could be the impetus they need to mount a fightback and rise up the standings.
Unless things improve and he gets his temperament under control, Morelos’s days at Rangers could be numbered. With just days left in the summer transfer window, time is running out for interested parties to make their move.
