Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon this summer.
According to The Athletic, newly promoted Premier League side Nottingham Forest are interested in making a summer move for out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon this summer.
The 25-year-old generated much hype when he moved to North London from Sevilla in the summer of 2020. However, Reguilon has failed to live up to his billing and has struggled to make an impact for Tottenham under Antonio Conte. Spurs have acted decisively in the transfer market and brought in Ivan Perisic among others.
The Croatian veteran is a perfect fit for Conte’s system and is likely to occupy the role this season. With Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon also in the mix, Reguilon’s chances of securing regular game time at Tottenham seem remote. Given that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will take place this year, spending time off the pitch will adversely impact the 25-year-old’s chances of making the Spanish squad.
Nottingham Forest could provide the player with a way out of his misery. Steve Cooper’s side have enjoyed a brilliant summer, bringing in 16 players, only one of which is on loan. Unfortunately, one of their signings, Omar Richards, has suffered a hairline fracture ruling him out of action for a while. Harry Toffolo can step in and do a job for the Premier League new boys but is unproven at the top level and cannot be relied on week in, week out.
Reguilon would be an excellent piece of business, handing Forest an experienced player with a point to prove. While the move is admittedly a step down for the Tottenham defender, it can guarantee him regular playtime. Small margins or upgrades such as these could determine Forest’s Premier League status come to the end of the current campaign.
Both teams have discussed a potential deal, and a loan transfer could be in the works. Tottenham, do not appear to be averse to letting the 25-year-old go but will need Forest to cover the player’s wages in full. Doing so will make Reguilon Forest’s third highest earner. It will represent a significant investment by a side that returned to the top flight for the first time in a generation.
As things stand, Reguilon moving to Forest is far from a close deal. However, stranger things have happened in the market, and we could be in for an interesting few days. In no uncertain terms, landing the Spaniard from Tottenham would be a steal for the Premier League new boys.
