Manchester United have reportedly been offered a chance to sign Barcelona target Thomas Meunier, with the Red Devils interested in a move.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, Manchester United have been offered a chance to sign Borussia Dortmund right-back Thomas Meunier. The 30-year-old defender is also a target for La Liga behemoths Barcelona.
Meunier has been with Borussia Dortmund for two years now, having joined the German giants from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020. He has been a regular fixture in the backline for the Black and Yellows, making 62 appearances in which he has three goals and seven assists. A proven performer at the club and the international level, the Belgian is attracting a lot of interest this summer.
Barcelona have set their sights on a move for Meunier as they seek a replacement for Sergino Dest, who is not favoured by manager Xavi Hernandez. Interestingly, the 21-year-old USMNT ace is a target for Manchester United and the Blaugrana plan to fill the void that would be left by his potential departure by signing Meunier.
Manchester United are also on the lookout for a new right-back as new manager Erik ten Hag is not entirely convinced by the options at his disposal. Aaron Wan-Bissaka had lost his place in the side to Diogo Dalot in the second half of the last season and has been unable to force his way back into the side under the new management.
The former Crystal Palace has been made available for a transfer this summer, with Dalot the current first-choice at right-back. However, the Portuguese defender has also not been entirely convincing, forcing Manchester United to look into the market for a new player in the position.
As iterated earlier, Manchester United have one eye on Barcelona’s Dest. But a report from The Telegraph claims that they are also interested in signing Meunier from Borussia Dortmund. The Red Devils had considered signing the Belgian international before their move for Wan-Bissaka and could now land the 30-year-old for a fee of €15 million.
Amidst the reports of their interest, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United have indeed been offered an opportunity to land Meunier from Borussia Dortmund. Any move, though, would depend on the Red Devils’ ability to offload Wan-Bissaka, who is a target for his former club Crystal Palace.
It remains to be seen how this merry-go-round involving Barcelona, Manchester United, Meunier and Dest evolves as we enter the final phase of the summer transfer window.
