Manchester United make Yann Sommer enquiry

Manchester United have enquired about Yann Sommer as they continue looking for a new No. 2 since Dean Henderson’s departure.

According to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas, Manchester United remain interested in bringing a new goalkeeper before the window closes, and have enquired about Swiss international Yann Sommer. The Borussia Monchengladbach man has a year left on his deal, but the German side are keen to extend his stay.

Manchester United continue to search for options that improve their current side. Having endured a difficult start to their domestic season, Erik ten Hag publicly mentioned the urgent need to sign quality players to turn their fortunes around.

The club suffered high-profile setbacks in pursuit of priority targets but remain confident of bringing in players that will help their cause. One of the areas of concern is the goalkeeper’s position, as there’s a dire need for a viable competitor for David De Gea.

On paper, Manchester United are only looking at a new No. 2 for the coming season. However, Ten Hag would like a quality signing to challenge De Gea and give him a run for his money. The departure of Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest has depleted the Dutchman’s options, with Tom Heaton the only viable backup.

Illan Meslier has emerged as a target, as the French stopper has been in superb form since coming to the Premier League. However, Leeds United have no interest in selling the Frenchman, let alone to Manchester United.

Hence the club has already begun looking at alternative targets, with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer emerging on their radar. The Red Devils have already enquired about the Swiss international’s availability, with the decision expected to remain with the player.

Sommer has a year left on his deal, with the 33-year-old contemplating a new challenge in another league, probably England. While Manchester United may seem like an attractive destination, it won’t be easy for the Swiss international to oust De Gea just yet.

Moreover, Monchengladbach reportedly made him a new three-year contract offer, allowing the keeper to continue his stint in Germany. Leaving the Bundesliga, where he is settled as his club’s No. 1 choice, would be a tricky prospect considering the World Cup is around the corner, and Sommer will want to play regularly to stay sharp.

The next step for Manchester United would be to cement their interest with a formal offer. If Sommer is open to the challenge, there may not be many problems in agreeing on a fee between the two clubs. However, the player’s decision will have to be concrete, as many things, including the World Cup spot, may depend on it.
