Newcastle United are reportedly considering a loan move for struggling Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic but face stiff competition from several European bigwigs.
According to Daily Mail, Newcastle United are interested in signing USMNT international Christian Pulisic on loan and have asked Chelsea to be kept updated about a potential deal for the struggling winger. However, the Magpies must fight off stiff competition from European powerhouses like Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and Juventus to secure his services.
Newcastle United have been desperately chasing attacking additions this summer but have only hit frustration so far, with inflated fees and premium wages proving to be stumbling blocks for the Magpies, who do not want to overspend on individuals. Names like Moussa Diaby, Alexander Isak, Jack Harrison, and many others have been linked with a move to St. James’ Park, but to no avail.
That is why Dan Ashworth & co. are turning to the loan market. Newcastle have thus added USMNT international Christian Pulisic to a long list of potential loan targets, which also includes his Chelsea teammates Callum Hudson-Odoi, Conor Gallagher, and Armando Broja.
Pulisic has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular since joining Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for £57.6 million in January 2019. The 23-year-old has also had to settle for a spot on the bench in the west London club’s first two Premier League games this season, earning only 30 minutes as a substitute.
To date, Pulisc has scored 25 goals and assisted 19 others in 117 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea. While he has shown flashes of his talent, injuries and a lack of consistency have made him a bit-part player at Stamford Bridge. Pulisic is eager to fight for his place to earn more regular first-team minutes ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
But Chelsea are open to loan offers for Pulisic, who still has two years left on his current contract. Undoubtedly, the struggling American forward is a fantastic player, and his potential availability has caught the attention of Eddie Howe, who is keen on bolstering Newcastle’s attacking options this summer.
Signing someone of Pulisic’s pedigree would be a coup for Newcastle, even on a loan deal, as they look to push into the top-eight berths in the Premier League. The Chelsea attacker can operate anywhere across the frontline and would be the ideal option for Howe, who is looking to add more goals and assists from the final third.
However, Newcastle will face stiff competition for the 23-year-old, with continental giants such as Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and Juventus showing interest in him. And while the Magpies are keen to land Pulisic, it is reported that he wants to play UEFA Champions League football this season, something the Tyneside outfit cannot offer at this stage.
Newcastle have promising links with Chelsea, with co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi in attendance for last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham. And there is a good chance that Blues could end up doing a deal with Newcastle before the deadline. However, whether that trade would be for USMNT international, Pulisic, remains to be seen.
