Newcastle United are reportedly tracking the progress of SK Sturm Graz’s Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund as they seek attacking reinforcements.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle United are keeping tabs on 19-year-old Danish forward Rasmus Hojlund, who currently plies his trade for Austrian outfit SK Sturm Graz.
Hojlund began his footballing journey at Danish outfit Boldklubben af 1893 before moving to the academy of Brondby, where he had a short stint before signing for Holbaek in the summer of 2016. A year later, he signed for FC Copenhagen, where he rose through the ranks and burst onto the first-team scenes, going on to make 32 appearances in which he scored five goals.
In January earlier this year, Hojlund left his boyhood club to join Sturm Graz and has enjoyed a productive start to life in Austria. So far, he has made 18 appearances for the club, bagging ten goals and three assists. Five of his ten goals for Sturm Graz have come in the ongoing campaign, which has seemingly caught the eye of Newcastle United.
It is no top secret that Newcastle are on the lookout for a new centre-forward this summer. While they have Callum Wilson and Chris Wood as options in the No. 9 role, the former’s injury woes and the latter’s poor form are a cause of concern for Eddie Howe. Hence, the Magpies’ manager is keen on adding another striker into the mix before the transfer window closes.
A move for Hugo Ekitike was seemingly wrapped up until the Frenchman hesitated at the last minute, causing Newcastle to end their interest. Since then, the Tyneside outfit have been linked with several attacking options ranging from Chelsea youngster Armando Broja to Atalanta’s veteran Colombian duo of Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel.
And, according to The Athletic, Sturm Graz prospect Rasmus Hojlund is also a name under consideration at St. James’ Park this summer. The report claims that Newcastle United have been tracking the Denmark Under-19 international but are yet to decide whether to launch a move for him or pursue other targets.
A talented young prospect, Hojlund is contracted with Sturm Graz until the summer of 2026. While he has shown a lot of potential in his short time in Austria, a move to the Premier League this early in his career might be a jump too steep for the 19-year-old. And Newcastle might be better off looking at other options in the market.
