Liverpool interested in Leroy Sane

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Bayern Munich forward Leroy Sane, who could cost around £50 million this summer.

According to 90 Min, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is interested in bringing Bayern Munich and Germany winger Leroy Sane to Anfield in the ongoing transfer window.

Sane, a product of the FC Schalke youth academy, shot to fame in Germany before earning a big-money move to Manchester City in 2016. The 26-year-old soon became a key player in Pep Guardiola’s setup and went on to register 37 goals and 46 assists from 134 appearances for the Cityzens. He returned to Germany in 2020, signing for Bayern Munich.

However, Sane’s time at the Allianz Arena so far has not been the roaring success fans expected it to be, as the German winger has struggled for consistency in his performances. So far, the twinkle-toed forward has made 91 appearances for the Bavarian giants, bagging 25 goals and 28 assists across all competitions, scoring and assisting a goal apiece in two games in the new season.

But Sane is no longer a guaranteed starter at Bayern Munich as he has to contend for a starting berth alongside Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and new signing Sadio Mane, who left Liverpool to join the Bundesliga champions earlier this summer. Indeed, the 26-year-old German international has not started either of Bayern’s two games this season, playing a combined total of 37 minutes.

This situation could lead to Sane considering his future at the Allianz Arena, especially with this being a World Cup year. Real Madrid have shown an interest in signing the former Manchester City winger, but as per the aforementioned report, Liverpool have also entered the fray to secure the services of Sane.

Liverpool have lost several forwards this summer. Apart from the aforementioned Mane, the Reds also bid goodbye to Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino, while they are yet to tie Roberto Firmino down to a new contract. So, even though they have brought in Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez in 2022, another top attacking addition wouldn’t go amiss at Anfield.

Signing someone like Sane would add genuine competition for Diaz on the left flank, and such depth would help Liverpool go the distance in all the competitions they will be playing in. The report states that it could take a bid of £50 million for the Reds to lure the German away from Bayern Munich, even though he has three years left on his contract.

The figure mentioned in the report does seem a bit low, considering that Bayern Munich charged Barcelona almost a similar fee for Robert Lewandowski, who had just a year left on his contract. Whether Liverpool hold a genuine interest in signing Sane and if they make an approach for the ex-Manchester City ace will be intriguing to see in the final few weeks of the transfer window.
