Barcelona might look to loan 20-year-old midfield prodigy Nico Gonzalez to Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Nico Gonzalez from Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants are open to loaning the 20-year-old prodigy to the Premier League club, with Miralem Pjanic likely to be Sergio Busquets’s backup in the 2022/23 season.
Nico Gonzalez is one of the brightest young prospects to have emerged from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy in the last few years. Such was the impact the Spaniard made at the youth level that Barcelona had been scrambling to tie him down to a long-term contract last summer.
The 20-year-old subsequently benefitted from Barcelona’s financial struggles, and he, along with Gavi, became first-team regulars for the Blaugrana in the 2021/22 season. Nico turned out 36 times for Barcelona last term, and his progress has captured the attention of Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly in the market for a midfielder this summer, even though they will likely keep hold of Ruben Neves, a target for Barcelona. With Joao Moutinho signing a new contract, Bruno Lage has his two first-choice midfielders at his disposal heading into the 2022/23 season.
But Moutinho is well into his thirties, and Lage might need to rotate the veteran Portuguese midfielder in the upcoming campaign. Nico Gonzalez has thus emerged as a viable target for Wolverhampton Wanderers, who might lose Morgan Gibbs-White to Nottingham Forest this summer.
Widespread reports have claimed that the 20-year-old prodigy is considering a loan exit from Camp Nou, and SPORT has corroborated such claims. The Spanish publication also adds that Barcelona will look to send Nico out on a temporary stint to the Premier League club in the coming days.

With Miralem Pjanic set to remain at Camp Nou beyond the summer transfer window, a loan move to Wolverhampton Wanderers might be the best solution for Nico Gonzalez to continue his growth. It will be interesting to see if a summer transfer sees the light of day, with the 20-year-old weighing up leaving Barcelona temporarily.
