Tottenham have reportedly been handed a blow in their pursuit of Weston McKennie after Paul Pogba suffered a serious injury.
According to 90 min, Juventus may not allow Weston McKennie to depart from the Allianz Stadium during the summer transfer window, which would come as a blow for Tottenham, who were keen on the 23-year-old midfielder. Paul Pogba’s recent knee injury means the Serie A giants are reconsidering their stance on the USMNT star.
Weston McKennie has been considered surplus to requirements at Juventus, despite putting in strong performances in the latter part of the 2021/22 season. Massimiliano Allegri began reshaping his squad, particularly in the midfield department, with the USMNT international considered unwanted.
The 23-year-old midfielder was attracting attention from Premier League clubs in January, but the departure of Rodrigo Bentancur to Spurs may have changed Juventus’s stance then. However, the Serie A giants signed Denis Zakaria in the winter transfer window, signaling a new style from Allegri.
Furthermore, the arrival of Paul Pogba in a Bosman move this summer has allowed Allegri to plan the new season without some of his existing midfielders. Arsenal-linked Arthur Melo, Adrien Rabiot, and McKennie could be allowed to leave for reasonable offers, but those plans have hit a snag after recent developments.
Pogba’s recent knee injury, which could keep him out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is considered serious and has left Allegri scratching his head ahead of the 2022/23 season. McKennie is the closest player to the Frenchman’s profile, forcing Juventus to keep the 23-year-old on board for the upcoming campaign.
Tottenham were reportedly interested in the midfielder as Antonio Conte is keen to replace some of his unwanted stars with the 23-year-old USMNT international. McKennie would ideally be considered a replacement for Tanguy Ndombele, who could depart from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on loan ahead of the new campaign.
Despite recent enquiries for the player and receiving a positive response from Juventus, Pogba’s injury will force the Serie A giants to retain the services of McKennie. It will come as a blow for Tottenham’s plans, who were keen on signing the 23-year-old midfielder.
As things stand, Spurs may have to look elsewhere to bring in a new midfielder as the USMNT international is likely to be taken off the market. He still has three years left on his deal in Turin, which will have Juventus relaxed about his potential sale in the future.
